I have had several students ask me the same question. How long will it take me to be a great singer. This is a very difficult question to answer because of so many variables.
First of all there is no magic timetable no matter who you are. Maybe you are a beginner who learns very quickly or maybe you are the slow and steady kind of person. The key is practice and education. You have to set up your singing routine and if you are truly serious start learning about the music itself.
I really think the question is, when will you feel comfortable singing in front of people and feeling good about it. My answer is start singing in front of people as soon as possible and practice and educate yourself. The more you know, the more confident you will feel and the sooner you will feel like a great performer.
I find that, in most cases, if you practice consistently and work hard to learn your craft you can become a competent singer in a decent amount of time. As far as being a great singer? It never stops being a goal. There is always something new to learn. A new song, a new exercise to strengthen the voice, a new performance. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a seasoned performer. You should always have a goal that you are working toward and you will find that your voice gets better and better no matter how famous you may get.
So get out there and start practicing and then you can let me know how long it took you to become a great singer.
Happy Singing!
