I have been asked if it is safe for children to take vocal lessons. There are a lot of different ideas on that question. My personal philosophy is that it is okay if you do it in the proper way.
If a child is under 12 you don’t want to do heavy exercises that may cause stress on the vocal chords. I recommend singing songs and learning music through games and easy exercises. Learning the basics of Solfegge (to those who don’t know what that is…think Do, Re, Mi, etc..) is extremely helpful and of course ear training and sight singing can easily be practiced without any worry of damage.
I highly recommend that, if possible, a child interested in music join a choir. It’s amazing training for a young singer.
Happy Singing!!
